The main reason for asthma, eczema and your allergies is found at home!

Standard

That’s right, in your home – that’s where the humble dust mite resides….

Dust mites are tiny organisms (up to 0.3 mm), which you can’t see with the naked eye. They have eight legs and are distantly related to spiders. They like to live in areas that are warm and humid and as a result, are found in the majority (if not all!) homes in the UK. Dust Mites live for 3-4 months with females laying 25 to 50 eggs, with a new generation produced every three weeks…sitting comfortably?!?

Other than triggering allergy and asthma symptoms, they don’t cause any harm. Some people are allergic to dust mites’ decayed bodies and faecal material, which become components of airborne household dust.

Where do they like to live…?

Like many of us, they love bed! A dust mite’s primary residence is a mattress, which may have anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million mites inside. Dust mites prefer warm, moist surroundings such as the inside of a mattress when someone is on it. Their favourite food is dander (human skin flakes). Bedroom carpets & household upholstery also typically supports high dust mite populations.

What problems do they cause…?

Estimates are that dust mites may be a factor in 50-80% of asthma cases, as well as in countless cases of eczema, hay fever, and other allergic ailments. The main area of concern is in very young children growing up in environments where there’s high dust mite exposure — or other types of allergen exposure. There is some evidence that if an infant or a young child grows up where there’s a high exposure to sensitizing substances, he or she will be more likely to develop allergy problems, asthma or both.
