If you’re one of those people who likes doing things themselves then the thought of carrying out your own pre or end of tenancy clean, whether you’re a landlord or tenant, has probably crossed your mind before!
As The Organised Cleaner is all about giving you useful tips & hacks when it comes to end of tenancy cleaning, we thought we’d provide you with a few pointers if you do decide to carry out your own end of tenancy clean…
- Products – make sure you get the right ones, especially if you’re tackling the oven and limescale removal! Essentials are a general purpose cleaners, a descale, a degreaser, a glass cleaner and an oven cleaner. There are plenty of options on the market, and make sure you wear gloves!
- Equipment – a hoover, mop & bucket are essential! Scourers and microfibre cloths will also be useful.
- Kitchen – Degrease the underside of cupboards and clean the inside and outside of the cupboards, fridge and freezer (once defrosted). Make sure you turn off the fridge and leave the door open after cleaning it to prevent mould. Remove and clean the washing machine soap tray and dishwasher filter as well. Descale the sink and leave it sparkling clean!
- Oven, Hob & Extractor – Tackling the oven will be your biggest challenge so make sure you leave plenty of time. Don’t forget to clean the hob & extractor fan as well.
- Bathroom – Removing all limescale is paramount, especially in the toilet and on the shower screen. Make sure you scrub all surfaces and tiles, in particular the mould on tiles and in the grout. Remove debris and hair from plug holes & drains. One thing often forgotten is to clean the extractor fan, which collects a lot of dust.
- Curtains & Blinds – If you can, take the curtains to a dry cleaner or arrange for them to be collected and re-hung. With blinds, make sure you dust both sides of the slats of venetian blinds and repair (or replace) any damaged slats.
- Windows – Clean the windows & window frames from the inside. Make sure you leave the glass panes streak free. Only clean the outside windows if required and make sur you get a window cleaner to do this properly for you!
- Carpets – The general rule of thumb is that if your rental property is carpeted and you have been living there for more than 6 months, you should have the carpets steam cleaned. You can do this yourself by hiring a Rug Doctor, but the best advice we can give here is to hire the professionals…
- Dusting -Make sure all surfaces are thoroughly dusted, even behind the sofa/bed and inside cupboards and wardrobes. Light fittings are often overlooked and a frequent item picked up on inventory reports so don’t miss them!
